Professional Truck Driver Training for Class A CDL

At HMTT, we offer a variety of state-licensed Class A CDL training programs to help you start your new career as a professional truck driver. Learn to drive a truck by actually driving one! We don’t use simulators for your truck driving training – all of your ‘behind-the-wheel’ training will be in an actual truck. 160 Hour State-licensed Class A CDL Certificate Program (Full Time)

Length: 5 weeks, 160 hours total
Permit Required Prior to Start: Recommended.
Class Start: Classes start weekly.
Also available on a part-time basis, and online classroom option.
Unlimited Road Tests: Yes.
Tuition: Contact us for pricing. Financial Assistance may be available to qualified students. 
Pre-Hire: This program will give you the minimum requirements necessary to fulfill a carrier pre-hire requirement.
Curriculum: The 160 hour CDL training program includes a 4 week in-school training period and a road test in the fifth week. Students will complete classroom and lab (behind-the-wheel) activities, pre-trip, interactive learning and independent study. Upon completion, students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion.  The program is based on the FHWA Model of Curriculum and follows the Professional Truck Driver Institute’s (PTDI) curriculum standards. This program also includes the National Safety Council Defensive Driving Certification class and hazardous materials course work.


120 Hour State-licensed Class A CDL Certificate Program

Length: 4 weeks, 120 hours total
Permit Required Prior to Start: Recommended
Class Start: Classes start weekly.
Also available on a part-time basis, and online classroom option.
Unlimited Road Tests: Optional.

Pre-Hire: This program provides students with minimal pre-hire opportunities.
Curriculum: The 120 hour CDL training program includes a 3 week in-school training period and a road test in the fourth week. Classroom work, lab (behind-the-wheel) activities, pre-trip, interactive learning and independent study will be completed during the program.  The program is based on the FHWA Model of Curriculum and follows the Professional Truck Driver Institute’s (PTDI) curriculum standards. This program also includes the National Safety Council Defensive Driving Certification class and hazardous materials course work.


460 Hour State-licensed Class A CDL Certificate Program

Length: 10-14 weeks, 460 hours total
Permit Required Prior to Start: Yes
Class Start: Classes start weekly.
Unlimited Road Tests: Yes.
Tuition: Contact us for pricing. Financial Assistance may be available to qualified students. 
Pre-Hire: Yes. This is the most affordable 460 Hour State-licensed Class A CDL course that offers pre-hires. This program requires that a student receive a pre-hire from an eligible carrier prior to enrollment.
Curriculum: This CDL training program includes a 4 week in-school training period and a road test in the fifth week. Students will complete classroom and lab (behind-the-wheel) activities, pre-trip, interactive learning and independent study. Upon completion, students will be awarded a Certificate of Completion.

Phase I
Phase I consists of 160 hours (4 weeks) of training at Heavy Metal Truck Training school, plus the CDL road test.

Phase II
Phase II consists of up to 300 hours (6-10 weeks) of paid externship and on-the-job training with a qualified carrier.

The program is based on the FHWA Model of Curriculum and follows the Professional Truck Driver Institute’s (PTDI) curriculum standards. The program includes the required road test that the student must pass in order to obtain a Class A CDL. This program also includes the National Safety Council Defensive Driving Certification class and hazardous materials course work.


Just a CDL Training

Our “Just a CDL training program is great for those who just want to get a Class A CDL license without going through a full certificate program and classroom training.

Length: 20 hours
Permit Required Prior to Start: Yes
Class Start: Classes start weekly, based on availability. Contact the school office for details and class schedules.
Tuition: Contact us for pricing. Financial Assistance may be available to qualified students. 
Pre-hire: This program offers very limited pre-hires and job placement opportunities.
Curriculum: This program offers 20 hours of hands-on “Behind-the-Wheel” training, pre-trip training and log book training, as well as a road test. The training and road test is provided in a truck with a manual transmission and short trailer. Experience driving a truck is highly recommended.

Log Books and Hours of Service

This training class is included with all of HMTT’s State-licensed Class A CDL Certificate Programs. However, individuals also have the option of taking this class separately. The course is 2.5 hours long and provides students the most recent and up-to-date log book and hours of service rules and regulations. The student will receive a log book textbook and a log book.
